Five key terms in defining communication: social, process, symbols, meaning and environment.

      • Communication is a social process, means that it involves people and interactions.
      • Communication is a process, means that it is ongoing and unending.
      • Communication involves symbols, an arbitrary label given to a phenomenon.
      • In communication, messages can have more than one meaning.
      • Environment is the situation or condition in which communication occurs.

Communication as Action: The Linear Model

Linear model of communication is a one-way view of communication

that assumes a message is sent by a source to a receiver through a channel

  • Scholars define noise as anything that interferes with the delivery of the message.
  • At least 3 types of noise:
    • Semantic noise
    • Mechanical noise
    • Environmental noise

Communication as Interaction: The Interactional Model

View of communication as the sharing of meaning with feedback that links source and receiver

Communication as Transaction: The Transactional Model

View of communication as the simultaneous sending and receiving of messages

A. Intrapersonal communication

Communication with oneself

In often happens when you imagine, think, and solve problems in your head

It is an internal dialogue and may take place even when you are with someone, or in public

Impression formation and decision making, symbols and meaning, observations and attributions, ego involvement and persuasion

B.Interpersonal communication refers to face-to-face communication between people

    • Doctor-patient, teacher-student, parent-child, husband-wife

    • Relationship maintenance strategies, relational intimacy, relationship control, interpersonal attraction

C. Group Communication are composed of a number of people who work together to achieve some communication purpose.

D.Organizational comm

Communication within and among large, extended environments

      • Organizational hierarchy and power
      • Culture and organizational life

E. Public Communication is a form of communication to a large group of listeners (audience)

F. Mass comm

  • Communication to a very large audience through mediated forms
  • Some research and theoretical concerns
    • Use of media
    • Affiliation and television programming
    • Media and values
    • Media and need fulfillment

G. Intercultural Communication

Communication between and among members of different cultural background.

Culture and rule-setting, culture and anxiety, hegemony and ethnocentrism
